Welcome to Karawamachi Shopping Area Home Page

Kawaramachi Shopping Area is located on Kawaramachi-dori Street in the heart of Kyoto city, between Sanjo-dori Street and Shijo-dori Street. It takes about 15 minutes to get there by taxi from Kyoto station. This area is very popular among Japanese tourists and visitors from abroad.

Kawaramachi-dori is a comparatively new area in a long history of Kyoto. This street was built during Tensei Period (around 1590), after famous Toyotomi Hideyoshi (one of Japan`s Three Unifiers) had started a big project of Kyoto city reconstruction.

In the final years of the Edo Period (the Bakumatsu), Kawaramachi area was a center of the Meiji Restoration. There still remain the monuments of the Omiya and the Kikuya - the guesthouses, where the leaders of that period Ryoma Sakamoto and Shintaro Nakaoka were assassinated on 15 November 1867 during their stay in Kyoto. Also you can find here many historical spots related to the Bakumatsu and the Meji Restoration times.

Kamogawa River, Takasegawa River and Kiyamachi-dori Street are located close to the Kawaramachi Shopping Area, so you can easily imagine the atmosphere of old Kyoto.

In modern times Kawaramachi Shopping Area is a home for nearly 130 shops and restaurants. All of them conduct mutual events and join efforts to make this shopping area a perfect place for "shopping" , "eating" , "playing" and "enjoying" for all their guests.
